Outside Catalyst Training

24:14 Training is in the process of rolling out a new online training system. This content will be moved to that system as soon as possible. Once that has happened, this material will be removed and a LINK to that system will be found on this page.

Advisory

Please note that a wide variety of people will be taking this training. Some will have been pursuing movements for only a few years. Some will have been involved in movement efforts for many years. The levels and types of experience will vary greatly.

In designing this training, we have no way of knowing which elements of being an outside catalyst you already know and which you do not. Even with topics with which you are quite familiar, there may be gaps in your understanding or experience. In reviewing topics, you may pick up one key new insight or be reminded of something you’ve known but overlooked.

As you go through this training, you have our blessing to adapt it to your needs. You are free to do the lessons in a different order or do just some elements of certain lessons.

While the trainers involved have a lot of experience, obviously we were not able to cover everything. Nor do we claim to be infallible! In reviewing the videos we occasionally disagreed with ourselves… (smile) So listen to the Lord and grapple with these issues with your co-laborers as you take your next steps forward. We pray this training will be of help to you.

Lesson 1 – History of Outside Movement Catalysts

The following video is with Neil Mims, Bill Smith, Curtis Sergeant and Stan Parks (each trainer’s name is linked to their short bio in the same document. ) Once you are in the document you can also just search or read through it instead of following each link.

Start the video and pause video for discussion as directed. Some videos will have pause screens and some will not.

Note the instructions on the Pause Screen to…

Discuss as a Group

1) What important concepts did you hear?

2) How does this apply to your ministry?

3) Is there an Action Step(s)?

Take your time and really work on these concepts and action steps. This is a Marathon, not a Sprint.

Endvision introduction:

Exercise – Do the following exercise(s) together or before your next group session as best suits the group. You can spread these session out over multiple days, weeks, months as you best see fit.

Read these sample Endvisions to spark some thought.

Do this evaluation exercise to consider your pursuit of the Endvision God has given you.

Read through these two documents describing the Endvision process.

The first one lays out Step-by-step process of How to Discern an Endvision.

The second one shows you how this happened in one specific context –
A Case Study in Reverse Problem Solving.

Spend time as a group praying for God to give you wisdom and inspiration.

Use the following steps to either create or improve your Endvision.

1. Consider what God’s Endvision for your people would look like if fulfilled – write this down and work on editing it.

Are there other people focused on the same group? Do you know their Endvision? Should you be partnering with them to created or improve an Endvision statement?

What concrete actions can you do to get a very clear picture of your goal?

How are you /will you casting vision to find others with a similar vision or help people catch the vision?

2. Consider the conditions necessary for you to get there.

Do you need demographic studies? partnerships? materials? personnel?

3. Work backwards to your present situation.

Spend a significant time dreaming about what it would be like in the future. Think about all the relationships, how people interact, and what’s happening in every area.

Now think about all the things that would have had to happen to get to this point?

What would be the key milestones that would have to be achieved?

What might be the critical things would have had to happen, without which reaching the goal would have been impossible?

4. Start making some goals and action plans, for how you might reach the desired future.

Separate these into current efforts over the next 3-6 months and future efforts that you are not yet ready to pursue but need to make sure you lay the groundwork when possible and address in the future.

FEEDBACK

We appreciate your feedback to improve this training – after each lesson you can click the feedback link and give us your input and suggestions.

Lesson 2 – Kingdom Parable – Hidden Treasure

Note to facilitators:

1. You are free to adjust the timing of these sessions depending on the timing of your group – some may do one or more lessons per week if they are spending a lot of time each week. Others will perhaps spend 2 or more weeks on one lesson. You may also do parts of the lessons separately and then discuss them during group time. The goal is to use the material to improve your catalyzation ministry – not to cover content – so take as long as you need to really work through the various issues.

2. In these lesson plans, we do not typically reference “lesson plan” follow-up from the previous session. We encourage you to incorporate that follow up as you start each session before going on to the new material. Each module, take some time to “look back” and have anyone tell any key stories of how they used the material from the last session — or how they have adapted their planning and/or implementation because of these sessions together.

Follow-up

Follow up the homework from the last module about Endvision.  Have everyone share their Endvision statement and some of their plans with the group and ask for feedback.  If they do not have one yet – make it a matter of serious prayer going forward that God will give each participant a clear, inspiring Endvision that they will be passionate to pursue for God’s glory. Your group should give personal attention to anyone who is struggling to define their vision. This can happen in  personal or online meetings or via emails. (People cannot move forward easily with the rest of the equipping if they do not have a clear, inspiring Endvision.)

Matthew 13:44

Let’s add more Biblical foundation of why we seek “God’s Kingdom here on earth as it is in heaven” with a devotion on Matthew 13:44

If you have multiple small groups you can discuss the following as a large group: have a few people share what they learned and how they will apply it.

Discuss this video on the Hidden Treasure with Laura Smith:

Reflection on Matthew 13:44-45

Until your next meeting each of you pray and reflect on these Kingdom parables of the “pearl” and “treasure” and your God-given Endvision and the passionate pursuit of God’s Kingdom and how/if this is your passion and pursuit.

Spend time in prayer as a group now about this topic.

Raising our Sails for Movements – read and do the exercise in this document

Needed Paradigm Changes – Go to this document to see some answers from other people pursuing movements and then you can share your answers as well.

Seven Deadly Sins – Ways to Kill a Movementread and discuss the following excerpt from David Garrison’s book on CPM. How does this apply to you? Spend time discussing and praying.

Critical Elements in Disciple Making Movements (DMM) – this document shows one group’s view of critical elements in DMM. DMM is one of several approaches God has used to start CPMs so your approach may be a bit different from this one (so some of these Elements may not apply).

Read through the document and then list and evaluate the critical elements of your own approach. Consider if you have a clear picture of the critical elements you are aiming for in catalyzing movements. Pray and work on any clarity needed in this for your ministry.

Lesson 4 – Role of the Outsider

The next video talks about the role of the “Outside Catalyst”.  This is the title of this overall training.  You will notice that this role is needed whether or not someone is just “visiting time to time” or is an “outsider” who permanently lives among the people group.

Some of you watching this may be “insiders” – so hopefully this training will help you learn more about your outside partners’ role and also help you if/when you are working as an outsider.

Outsiders or Insiders will have slightly different dynamics.  We have the example of Paul overviewed in the next video as an example of someone who visited from time to time and did not live permanently among his “people group” or “place”  Pay attention to the “relationships” that were developed by Paul and others that give us a glimpse of how a church and movement can begin.  Paul developed insiders, or left other outsider team members in a place to continue to develop the “insiders”.

This video will stop several times for discussion about the topics. If you are doing this with a large group, feel free to sometimes discuss in small groups and sometimes discuss as a large group – whatever is most helpful to you. Make sure you are taking notes of key concepts and action steps.

Lesson 5 – Finding the Right Insider

As we talked about earlier, please make sure everyone is taking “notes for concepts and follow-up action steps” either in a notebook or a document.  Also, have time to discuss these notes in your group(s). We can definitely learn from each other.

Make sure you give everyone individual time to think and pray about put these concepts and action steps during the sessions. You can take your time and continue working on various exercises between group sessions. Remember that this is a long-term effort, not a collection of content to “finish”.

Our next session starts a discussion on “How to Find the Right Insiders”.  That is, the people who you pray will become the leaders who start new churches and prayerfully lead a growing movement of disciples and churches.

Lesson 10 – Pace

All our training is about planting healthy churches and disciples that can multiply.   There is a need for quality discipleship through regular patterns of learning and obedience.  We cover this “depth” of discipleship we want to see in most sessions of this training.  But a key to disciple depth, AND — if we want to see many people reached for Christ — we have to help people and churches multiply rapidly.  Many movements have found that a key in having a movement that is deep AND wide we must  have a pattern like Paul sought in 2 Thessalonians 3:1: “pray for us that the message of the Lord may spread rapidly and be honored, just as it was with you”.   The pace of discipleship, sharing the Gospel, and starting new groups that become churches — “Pace/importance/urgency” in multiplication actually helps deepen discipleship as well as see more groups and churches started.”

Lesson 16 – Ongoing Training Approaches

This module is about various styles, issues, and challenges of how to do on-going equipping of people within new churches and movements.  This overall “Outside Catalyst Training” supposes you already have training materials.  We pay attention here to how you will plan and roll out training at various points of progress: as an engagement starts, groups start, churches start, and a movement  grows.  We delve into how to think through reproducibility issues and ways to structure training for disciples, church leaders, church cluster leaders, and movement leaders.

Discuss these videos on Ongoing Training Approaches

1) What are the core movement training tools you use? Are there any action steps to address key issues?

2) What are the refinement processes you use? Any action steps?

3) Can you identify gaps you have? Any action steps?

Movement Training vs. Church Based Equipping

How are you working with insiders to help the leaders and churches grow in ongoing relationships and equipping? Any action steps?

Functional Training vs Advanced Theological Training

How can movements address “advanced theological education” without using an approach that hinders ongoing growth and maturity in the movement?

How can this be done within the movement without sending them to existing Bible colleges and seminaries – which are more focused on the institutional church and professional ministers?

Any Action Steps?
Review some of these Online CPM Training sites. Discuss how you might use any of these existing resources and/or develop / improve your own materials.

Lesson 17 – Deeply Understanding “Model, Assist, Watch, and Leave” (MAWL)

MAWL is in many ways the “Training Cycle.” Many movement catalysts have found that by far the most needed part — the most difficult part — for an “outside catalyst” to begin a “movement” is becoming skilled at what some call “The Training Cycle”.   How do we not only “train” (teach for knowledge) but teach believers, especially new believers to “obey” and implement church planting skills like:

  • start talking about Jesus with others
  • sharing your faith in one or more discussions with people
  • leading a Discussion/Participative Bible study,
  • how do you help a Bible study group become a church
  • how do we raise up leaders over time by repeating this “training process” with others?

and many more skills we could list that are needed for someone to become an obedient disciple.

Any new skill will usually need an “Outside Catalyst” to at least start the local people in “mastering” that skill by not just talking about it, but   “Model, Assist, Watch, and Leave” (MAWL) a person to at least somewhat “master” this new skill.  If done well, anyone who has learned a skill will turn right around and “Model, Assist, Watch and Leave” others to live out each piece movement lifestyle.

Discuss this video with Curtis Sergeant

  • What do you think of this example of a parent teaching their child? What does it teach us about MAWL?
  • The one “example” actually had many steps to learning. How does that correspond with CPMs?

Discuss this video with Curtis Sergeant

  • What mistakes are you making in the MAWL process?
  • Am I a “model” of doing the things that I am training others to do?
  • Do you give your partners a chance to see you “model” aspects of what you are teaching them?  If not possible for them to see you do it, do you have key partners who are modeling these things for others?
  • Where are you at understanding and implementing the “MAWL” training process or am I just “training” and hoping that some of those I train will “get it” and do things without my help?
  • Do you have a list of skills and a “training process” for those you impact to be mentored and in turn mentor others in key parts of having faith discussions, prayer, starting Bible study groups, then turning around and raising up others to do these things?

Action Steps

Take time to write down action steps you need to take to improve on key skills and/or implementing MAWL in your work.

Lesson 22 – Models of Church

The following videos talk about the different models of church. Recognizing which model(s) of church you come from and which model of church you are trying to catalyze are both very important as this will influence how you work and who you can/want to work with.

Watch this first video with Neill Mims

Discuss in your group

1.   How have you experienced these various “models” of church?

2.  Clarify for each other any questions about the various models and how each one has different requirements for:
— leadership
— training, discipling
— facilities

3.  Take 5-6 minutes to draw your own “picture” of what model you want to pursue among your people group or place (as instructed in video).

4.  Each person show their “model” and explain any differences from other model pictures.

Watch the second video on this topic with Neill Mims

Discuss:

1.   Any ideas from the video or additional ideas you have about working with “models” of churches in various countries and “Your Country”.

2.  Take  5-6 minutes to make/start a  picture of the dynamics of churches, networks, denominations, in “Your country” (and people group and place).

3.  Discuss each of your pictures and any ideas spurred in this exercise.

4.  Take 3-4 minutes for everyone to write action steps of what they will need to do to cast vision and work toward a clearer “model” that may lead to movement in the people group or place you are working.  How will you take steps to discuss this with key partners?

5.  Discuss each person’s action steps – this may spur further ideas among others in the group.

Here is a lesson plan of how the video trainer presented this session to spark your own ideas and discussion among local co-laborers.

Lesson 26 – Access Ministries

Before we can share the good news with people, we must gain access to them. The very ways we gain access – meeting needs – is part of sharing the good News of Jesus.

There are many ways to do this: business people have access to their customers; teachers have access to students and their families; meeting humanitarian needs provides good access to both those being helped; God’s miracles can often provide access to people and communities previously closed or uninterested in the gospel.

In many places in the world today, if we don’t have a good reason to enter a community, the community will be suspicious toward the church planter and will reject them and in some places may even imprison or physically attack the church planter.

Depending on the stage of work you are in, you may already be heavily involved in access ministries. Re-examine your efforts and assumptions are you work through these videos below.

Look at these Scripture passages to examine multiple ways God created access for His servants in the Bible.

In this video, Shodankeh Johnson explains how they use Access Ministry in their movement work in Africa.

This Final Command video has Younoussa Djao, Shodankeh Johnson, Aychi Beyene, David Broodryk, Aila Tasse and other African movement leaders going more in-depth on the principles and practicalities of access ministry.

Questions

What are key principles you need to keep in mind for access ministries?

What are pitfalls of access ministries in general and certain access ministries specifically and how have or will you avoid them?

Read and discuss this article about Sustaining Kingdom Advance which examines avoiding the wrong kind of access ministry.

Lesson 27 – Women in Movements

The majority of stories about Church Planting Movements profile men. However, women play key roles in both starting and sustaining church planting movements. In some movements more than half of the church leaders are women.

Recognizing how to serve and empower women in movements is important for all outside catalysts, whether you are a man or a woman.

Now watch and discuss this video on Women in Movements with Rhonda

You can follow along in Rhonda’s powerpoint if it will be useful.

Rhonda has written some advice that is primarily for women serving as outside catalysts.

Lesson 28 – Movements starting Movements

Of the 1400+ Church Planting Movements in the world, an estimated 80% or more were started by other movements. As one catalyst in the Middle East said, “This changes everything!” The following videos discuss this dynamic globally and then from the perspective of both an inside movement catalyst (Victor John) and an outside movement catalyst (Kevin Greeson).

Movements Starting Movements with Kevin Greeson

Given this reality, a new role has emerged. Rather than only being focused on catalyzing a new movement from the start, some have recognized that perhaps serving a movement to start more movements could be more strategic for their own involvement. Read this article on “Movement Servants Needed” by Dave Coles and Stan Parks and consider and discuss and pray about this as a group.

Lesson 29 – Case Study of a Family of Movements Starting Other CPMs

The following is an in-depth look at a family of movements that at the time the video was recorded had impacted 65 UPGs in their own country and multiple other UPGs in 19 other countries. Benny is one of the key inside catalysts of this family.

This module can accomplish several purposes:

1.  Remind us that 80+% of movements are started by existing movements and help us consider how that might change our strategies and efforts.

2.  How can you work now to help local leaders become “Outside Catalysts” to other UPGs and Places?

3.  Use this a vision casting tool to show local brothers and sisters to help them catch the vision and solidify the steps to take to start outreach to other UPGs and Places.

4.  Give you encouragement and use as a “case study” to see how a “Local Leader” who was trained/mentored/coached by one Outside Catalyst, is now a movement leader now impacting other people groups with a similar strategy.

Stages and Leadership Development with Benny

Watch and pause the video as often as you like to discuss what you have heard and apply it to your situation(s).   Especially pause to discuss the questions at the end.

Take time for each person to quietly pray over any steps they listed that they need to take. Listen to the Lord, and add any other steps God would have each person take in the next weeks and months to help consider how you can “set the DNA” now, and take steps at the right times to help their People or Place start movements among other UPGs and Places.

Watch and pause this second video as often as you like to discuss what you have heard and apply it to your situation(s).

Factors Supporting Movement Multiplication with Benny

What elements of this will you take to your local partners now to discuss in “setting the DNA” for the future? How can you work to send harvesters to other peoples and places?

Pray together as a group and discuss any action steps you need to take.

Lesson 30 – Crisis Response

This module is to help you ask God and your local partners how best you can strategically and “sustainably” respond to a disaster, crisis, or open door among a very needy people group or place.   Remember the goal is not only to help those in need — but how do we respond in a way that builds the Kingdom of God and either furthers a movement already happening, or can open the doors to find “Persons of Peace” to start new groups, churches, movement(s).

The same family of movements that Benny described is also served by Trevor who is the key outside catalyst God used to help start this movement family. The country they live in has had quite a few severe crises, and God has used these crises to open doors to the gospel.

Beginning with the End in Mind with Trevor

Strategic Crisis Response – Sustainable Recovery with Trevor

Responding to a Crisis or Disaster well is going to be a LOT OF WORK and involve many steps.

  1. Are we ready?   How do we get ready to implement these principles and steps well?
  2. With your team, take some time to start writing a plan of first steps you will take to think of the right partners, resources, steps you need to take if you are to strategically respond to a disaster.  If you have already done this type of planning, then work on improving your plan(s).
  3. What are the next steps you need to take to strategically respond NOW or WHEN NEEDED in crisis/disaster?
